Shorewood is a village in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 13,763 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Shorewood is located at (43.092061, -87.886333). It borders Milwaukee to the south and west, Whitefish Bay, WI to the north, and Lake Michigan to the east.
   According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 13,763 people, 6,539 households, and 3,328 families residing in the village. The population density was 8,599.5 people per square mile (3,321.2/km²). There were 6,696 housing units at an average density of 4,183.9/sq mi (1,615.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 91.43% White, 2.41% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.51% of the population.
   There were 6,539 households out of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 49.1% were non-families. 39.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.08 and the average family size was 2.87.
   In the village the population was spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.4 males.
   The median income for a household in the village was $47,224, and the median income for a family was $67,589. Males had a median income of $47,616 versus $34,294 for females. The per capita income for the village was $32,950. About 3.8% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.5% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.

Landmarks

  • The 329 meter high WITI TV Tower, was once one of the tallest lattice towers in the world.
  • Hayek's Pharmacy is a drugstore located at 4001 N. Downer Ave, the old interior of which was featured on the cover of the Images of America book on Shorewood's historic buildings. Downer is the oldest retail building in Shorewood, dating back to the turn of the 20th century.
  • Ravenna Park, the old Amusement Park that was abandoned 34 years after opening(External Link)

Notable current and former residents of Shorewood include:
  • Bill Carollo, National Football League referee
  • John Fiedler (1925-2005) voice actor and character actor in stage, film, television and radio, perhaps best remembered for two roles: the voice of Piglet in Disney's many Winnie the Pooh productions and the role of Mr. Peterson, nervous patient on The Bob Newhart Show.
  • U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, while born in Milwaukee, grew up in Shorewood, and was a 1941 graduate of Shorewood High School.
  • Jerry Zucker, David Zucker, and Jim Abrahams were co-directors of movies such as Airplane! and Top Secret! also grew up and went to school in Shorewood.
